'It's almost time, isn't it?' A single thought asked, coming from a certain person who had been concentrating on the big clock on the wall ever since he had arrived in the room. Maybe he had been looking at the clock the entire day, from classroom to classroom, all through the lunch period while he almost didn't finish his meal, and beyond the last bell of the school sessions before Clubs began their activities. Even though he had tried to get his mind off of the circular objects with two hands and numbers printed on it, the clicks that come from it made him slightly irritated, forcing him to gaze at it once again to see the time. Looking at the current time, a few minutes before 5 PM, he could slowly the beating in his heart become more upbeat and noticeable to someone who was sitting, or standing, near him.
Of course, it was not the clocks themselves that made the inside of his chest tighten and his face feel hot. Instead, it was that one little number that meant more to him, on this single day in January, so much so that the wait for the small hand on the clock to reach that number was driving him insane. Five. This number represented alot of things, such as how many fingers you have on each hand, or the number of days in a week excluding weekends, but to this young man, Tetsu, it meant something more than what day it was or how many fingers he had. That number represented a deadline to him, created by himself to drive him to accomplish something he has wanted to do for a couple of weeks now: Confess to his crush, who was sitting only a few feet away from him.
All through the day, when he wasn't tempted to stare at the slowly-moving hands of the clock, he fantasized about 2 things. The first was how he was gonna go about confessing his feelings to this girl that he adored. This girl, Mitsu, was younger than him by a year or so and her height barely reached his shoulders. For as long as he could remember, they have been friends since Junior High and they knew pratically everything about each other. With that in mind, Tetsu just kept trying to find the correct words he could use for this big moment that could change their entire relationship forever. He thought about being funny, but he felt like that would make it seem like he wasn't taking it seriously. Then, he thought about telling her how much he has been yearning for her, but he thought that saying something like that would be creepy. Really, he just didn't know what to say as of yet.
The second was what would change from this, which tetsu was both ready for and scared of. His cynical nature immediately imagined that she would reject him and then not talk that much to him anymore, which would be the worst case scenario and make him depressed. However, he did imagine a scenerio where Mitsu would accept his feeling and become his girlfriend. He thought about the upcoming holiday in Feburary and the various things he could do for her on that 14th day. He did hear about that new bakery in Kyoto, which would be ideal for a first date since Mitsu and himself liked sweet stuff quite a bit. But, after his mind ran that fast ahead, he cut his imagination short to not get his hopes up like that. If he went in with high expectations and go rejected, that would make the pain in his chest feel 10 times as worse than going in with low expectations, which he decided to do.
Just as he had finally thought of what he was going to say, he heard the loud ringing of the school bell, signalling that the school day was drawing to a close. This just made his line of thinking crash once again and his heart skip a beat, knowing that it was time. Time to put all that he had on the line for a chance to, hopefully, convince this idealistic young lady into going out with such a cynical guy like himself. He already knew that his chances were slim, but he tried tapping into that small part of him that was still idealistic, telling himself that if he didn't do this today, then he would never get the opportunity again.
"Yes! Another school day over! Time to go home and watch some anime!" The other guy in the room, Ren, got up and stretched before walking over to the shelf and slipping the copy of 'Shadows of Time' back where he got it from at the beginning of the club session. Then, he tried to grab his bag and head out the door of the clubroom, but someone else has stepped in front of him with a big smile on her face. The other girl in the room, Yuki, stood in Ren's way to keep him from grabbing his bag, not allowing him to leave. The look on Ren's face showed very clearly, to anyone that was looking dead at him, that he didn't know exactly why Yuki was getting in his way.
"Ren-chan, don't you think that you're forgetting something very important?" She asked him, indirectly telling him that he needed to do something, obviously for her. She was, how you would say, a very selfish person to someone who didn't know her that much. One quality, that even Tetsu would tell someone if they asked about Yuki, was that she has a very big god complex that could rival Lucifer's. Though, there was a side to her that could possibly make her seem as normal as any other person...but, for right now, that little part doesn't matter.
"No, I'm not forgetting anything." Ren honestly said, admitting that he didn't know what he was suppose to do, but looking at Yuki's smile twitching, he immediately saw that he stepped on a huge landmine. "April Fools! I was just messing with you, that's all." He tried covering up his tracks, even giving Yuki a forced laugh while scratching the back of his head, like the normal MC of an anime would do, but Yuki was not easy to fool...and Ren kinda knew this deep down. After he stopped laughing, he was met with Yuki's signature 'Do you think I'm an idiot' look. "Fine, I don't know what you mean. Please remind me." He gave in, then recieved a swift kick to his shin. "Ow!"
"Idiot! Don't just forget about what you owe me from earlier just like that!" She yelled at Ren, who was now on the floor while grabbing his inflicted shin. It was then that he remembered earlier's situation, involving him getting into a fight with the Student Council enforcer named Daichi. During the fight, in the luch room no less, he was thrown all the way across the entire area and unto the table where Yuki was sitting, landing directly on her food. In a fit of rage, she used her shadow property to slam Ren against the table a few times until he promised to owe her anything for ruining her lunch. Really, how could you forget something like that in a matter of hours?
"Alright, Alright! What do I owe you? 1000 yen? Me graveling at your feet, going 'I'm not worthy! I'm not worth!'?"
"No. You're gonna buy me a slice of Rasberry Cheesecake at the cafe."
"But...that costs more than 1000 yen..."
"And...?"
"Ugh...I guess I can do that, since we're members of the same club."
"And because we're friends."
"...let's get a move on." Ren ignored what she said, walking past her to get his bag. As he did, he looked at the other two in the room, who haven't moved from where they were since the club session started. Tetsu was, apparently, reading a manga while looking at the time every few minutes, while Mitsu was laying in her hammock, watching videos on YouTube. "Hey, do you two wanna-"
"Let's go, Ren." Yuki interrupted him, already knowing what was going on. Like stated before, Yuki was very hard to fool, so she had alreay read the atmosphere quite well to know that something was about to happen...and she needed to leave along with Ren so that they weren't in the way of things. (That, and she kinda heard rumors of Tetsu liking Mitsu, so there was that fact as well that made that line of thinking make some sense.) Ren, looking dumbfounded, just went along with Yuki and they made their way out of the room, closing the door behind them. Before Ren could continue walking down the hall, Yuki was quick to pull him back to the door and made his crouch down. Putting a single finger over her lips, she just pressed her head against the wooden door. Ren just followed suit, not really knowing what was going on.

"Tetsu, do you have that bag of sweets with you?" Mitsu asked tetsu, standing right besides him as she have him a carefree smile. He had actually gotten lost in his own thoughts that he almost jumped when Mitsu confronted him. He immediately gave a forced smile as he was about to reply to her, but then he started thinking about it, coming to a revelation: He didn't bring the bag of candy today. Of all the days to forget it, he chose today to not pack one and bring it to school. He could have possibly used it to maybe help in confessing to her, but then again, that's bribing...which is wrong.
"Sorry, I kinda forgot it. But, I'll definently will bring it with me tomorrow. I promise." Tetsu replied to Mitsu and was met with a disappointed Mitsu.
"Aw. I wanted something sweet to eat while heading home. It would have made the trip through the snow a bit worth it, but it's fine. I guess I'll be heading out. Bye, Tetsu." She gave him a small wave before turning away and walking to the door. In the heat of the moment, Tetsu's hand automatically grabbed onto Mitsu's wrist to stop her from leaving. When she turned around, looking confused at Tetsu for stopping her, his face burned red as he thought about what he wanted to do next.
"Wait. There's something I need to tell you. Can you stay a little bit longer?" Tetsu said with a serious expression on his face and his heart now racing as he gazed up at her.
"Sure. Why not?" She answered him, putting her bag down and taking off her winter jacket. Instead of sitting down at the table, she stayed on her feet while looking down at Tetsu, who was still sitting down in that old, black office chair. This was the moment that Tetsu wanted, the one he has been waiting for since he woke up that morning, looked at the ticking clocks all day, and fantasized about. All his planning and thoughts would either reward him with the person he truly desired, or break him as he leaves this room today with a friendship down the toilet. He took a deep breath, then he started speaking.
"We've known each other for a while, don't you think? I still kind of remember the day we met, back in that one club in middle school, run by that girl with the hair that could make you think she just gathered a pile of Cherry Blossoms and put it on her head. We had alot of fun in that club, along with the fun that we had in this club...but, for the last few months, I've been having this feeling...not a dark and cynical feeling, but rather, a light-hearted and idealistic one. It makes my face grow bright red while my heart beats so much that I think it'll burst right out of my chest and run away. At first, I didn't know what it was, but I know it was towards you...the one that has helped me see a much brighter world than the one I use to know. It took me a while, but it was this one day where all the gears started turning and the answer popped up in my head. I've been trying to deny it, since I think it could possibly ruin the good friendship that we had...but, I don't think I can deny it anymore, Mitsu." Tetsu stood up out of his chair and stepped closer to Mitsu, who had already figured out what was happening since the 3rd sentence.
"Tetsu, I...sorry." Mitsu just whispered, then turned heel and ran straight out of the classroom as Tetsu just looked on from inside the room. He felt incredibly rejected as he slowly bent down to take his seat in the old chair again, but before he could...
"Run after you, you dumbass!" Yuki yelled at Tetsu, her eyes showing that she was dead serious with what she was saying to him. Tetsu, shocked, looked towards the door as he saw Yuki standing in the doorway with her fist bawled up. Right next to her was Ren, as serious as she was as he stood there looking at Tetsu about to give up.
"But-"
"No! Don't you dare give up here! It's not over til that sun outside goes down and the day ends! This doesn't end until she has given you a clear answer...so, DON'T JUST LET HER RUN AWAY! IF YOU DO, I COULD NEVER FORGIVE YOU!" Yuki exclaimed as she grabbed the collar of his shirt and gave his such an angry look that it could rival Daichi's. Tetsu, surprised at what Yuki was yelling to him, stared at Yuki for a few seconds before realizing that he was being an idiot. He didn't have to run after her...he needed to. He wanted to catch up to her, tell her those 3 words that he has been wanting to say for a while now, and get an actual answer. This sparked determination in him that made what he did next possibly the best thing he ever did.
He stood up straight, pushed Yuki aside, and with the amount of speed he could channel out of him, he started running as fast as he could out of the room and down the hallway in the direction that Mitsu ran. He couldn't give up, especially after going all this way to tell her his true feelings. It didn't matter if she said yes to him, or no, he wanted her to know how he felt towards her and get a legit answer. With his feet moving as fast as his heart, and his mind made up with what he wanted to say, he set out to find Mitsu...even if he had to run all over Kyoto to find her.
